Camp Oven Cook Out

The camp oven cookout at Ted & Anne’s home in Mt Kuringai has become an annual event on the RRC social calendar and is always a great day. This year was no exception with a great turnout by members. The weather could not have been better with a clear blue sky creating a warm afternoon and a very comfortable (that is not cold) evening. On such a great day, it was very enjoyable to unload our cooking gear and socialise in bush environment of Ted and Ann’s back yard, enjoying the wooded views and good company.

Although this event has been going on for many years now, Ted is still fine-tuning the schedule and this year had the fire going early. As we continued with our happy hour nibblies, the fire established itself and very soon provided some great embers for cooking. Out came the camp-ovens and what a variety of food there was, including bread,  meat loaf, beef roasts, lamb, a variety of chicken dishes, a half pumpkin and more. It’s never fails to amaze me at what you can cook in a camp-over, how simple it really is and how good the food tastes.

After a couple of hours in cooking mode, the food was ready at the appointed time and was laid out on a large table with everyone trying some of the menu. After the main course, Anne again produced her delicious apple crumble with custard & cream for dessert. With the fire stoked up and providing a pyrotechnic display  by way of some ‘roman candles’, it was very a enjoyable evening to sit around and chat  over a glass of wine and a cup of coffee (and some more apple crumble).

As always, the embers were even better for cooking later on, so Ted has resolved to start the fire even earlier next year. All in all, what a great way to spend a Saturday afternoon and evening!     Thanks, again, to Anne & Ted for opening their home and hosting another terrific camp- oven cookout. We’re already looking forward to next year!
