JOADJA GHOST TOWN
EXPLORE THE REMNANTS OF A FORMER MINING TOWN
Joadja, located in an isolated valley about 30km from Mittagong, was once a thriving shale mining town from 1870 to 1911, with vast quantities of shale being mined to produce kerosene. With a population reaching 1,100 people, Joadja became one of the largest towns in the Southern Highlands. When mining operations ceased in 1903 Joadja was eventually deserted becoming the ghost town it is today.
Although many buildings have been ruined by fires, many still remain intact including miner’s cottages, a schoolhouse, the church, much of the huge shale refinery ovens and the cemetery.
This trip promises to be a great social day and a paradise for history buffs and photographers!
The $30 per person entry fee includes morning tea and a sausage sizzle lunch, and there’s a kiosk for hot food and Devonshire teas etc.
